Sappada

Sappada is a German-speaking Plodarisch enclave in the Friuli Carnic Alps, where the Piave river begins and the chimneys are still wooden. The village at 1,250 m sits beneath Monte Siera, with a small alpine area and a wide network of cross-country trails on the Borgate. Carnival here is the real thing, masked, ancient and loud.

Ski-in/ski-out

Sappada's lifts cluster at the Pian dei Nidi and Sappada 2000 bases, both a short distance from the main village. A few hotels at Sappada 2000 offer true ski-in/ski-out; in the historic Borgate, expect a short walk, ski-bus or quick drive to the lifts.

Get to know the resort

Sappada sits at 1,250 m near the source of the Piave river, in a sunlit basin where the Friuli Carnic Alps meet the eastern Dolomites. The Plodarisch community keeps its medieval German dialect alive, and the village reads like a postcard: log houses with painted facades, wooden balconies and snow-laden roofs strung across the fifteen Borgate. The alpine ski area on Monte Siera is small, six lifts and about 25 km of pistes, with 8 blues, 10 reds and 3 blacks rising to 2,050 m, but the cross-country network and the deep snow make it punch above its weight. Snow holds reliably from early December into April. Beyond the pistes, the famous Carnival, with its hand-carved wooden masks, draws visitors from across northeast Italy. Cortina is a quick drive south through the Cadore, but here you keep the mountains, the silence, and a fraction of the bill.
