Sappada is a German-speaking Plodarisch enclave in the Friuli Carnic Alps, where the Piave river begins and the chimneys are still wooden. The village at 1,250 m sits beneath Monte Siera, with a small alpine area and a wide network of cross-country trails on the Borgate. Carnival here is the real thing, masked, ancient and loud.
