December opens the 2026/27 season with cold nights, short days, and the first proper layer of snow on the high glaciers. Christmas lights flicker in alpine villages, and the resorts that climb above 2,000m are the safe bet while lower stations wait for natural cover. It's festive, expensive, and a special time to start the winter.
January is the cold heart of winter. The crowds thin out after the first weekend, temperatures drop, and the snow settles into the deep, dry layer that makes the season's best powder days. It's the locals' favourite month, and once the holiday rush ends around January 7, you get the mountain back at its quietest and coldest.
February is high season everywhere. Snow is reliable across the board, days are noticeably longer, and the slopes look properly dressed. The catch: school half-terms collide across the UK, France, Germany, and Switzerland through the month, with the second and third weeks the busiest of the entire winter. Picking the right resort and the right week matters more than usual.
Many serious skiers will tell you March is the best month of the season. The base is at its deepest, the daylight stretches past 6pm, and the high-altitude resorts are still cold enough at night to lock in firm, fast morning piste. Crowds thin once the late February holidays end, and prices drop noticeably. It's the connoisseur's month.
April is spring skiing at its sunlit best. Mornings start crisp on firm corduroy, lunch is on a sun-drenched terrace in shirtsleeves, and afternoons soften into easy slush. Below 1,800m many resorts are winding down, but the high-altitude headliners still ski wonderfully right through the month. Lift passes drop, lodging deals open up, and the slopes feel almost private.
While Europe and North America bake in summer, the snow flips south. From June through September 2027, the southern winter delivers a parallel ski season across Australia, New Zealand, and a handful of unlikely African outposts. The terrain is smaller, the culture different, but the snow is real and the experience is a season-extending adventure for committed skiers.
