Where to ski in February 2027
February is high season everywhere. Snow is reliable across the board, days are noticeably longer, and the slopes look properly dressed. The catch: school half-terms collide across the UK, France, Germany, and Switzerland through the month, with the second and third weeks the busiest of the entire winter. Picking the right resort and the right week matters more than usual.
Top picks for this period
To dodge the half-term crush, look beyond the megaresorts. Ischgl in the Austrian Tyrol delivers serious 240km terrain and lively nightlife while being slightly off the British radar. Madonna di Campiglio in the Italian Dolomites combines incredible scenery with shorter lift queues than France's Three Valleys. La Rosière in France offers a sunny south-facing aspect and a link to La Thuile in Italy, with prices well below Val d'Isère next door. In the US, Sun Valley in Idaho gives Aspen-quality skiing without Aspen crowds, and Big Sky Montana offers 5,800 acres for the same crowd-free feel. For those who want the famous names, mid-week stays around February 8 or after February 22 in Verbier and Zermatt avoid the absolute peak.
February is the busiest skiing month of the year, full stop. UK half-term hits week 7 (mid-February), French school holidays roll across three zones from early to late February, and German Karneval week adds another spike. The peak weekends will see lift queues of 20 minutes or more in popular resorts, restaurants book out a day ahead, and lodging prices double or triple over January rates. The flip side is that conditions are usually excellent: a solid base built over December and January, longer daylight (last lifts now around 5pm), and that bluebird high-altitude alpine light that defines a perfect ski day. To make February work, three strategies: book mid-week stays (Sunday to Friday or Monday to Saturday) to skip the changeover weekend chaos; pick under-the-radar resorts like La Rosière, Andorra's Grandvalira, or Aragon's Astún; or go to North America, where February crowds are heavy on weekends but manageable Tuesday to Thursday. Park City and Aspen still carry their X Games heritage and offer big-event energy on the slopes. Avoid the absolute middle two weeks at all of the Three Valleys, Espace Killy, Portes du Soleil, and Paradiski megaresorts unless you're committed to the price and queues.
