Get to know the resort
Rusutsu spreads across three peaks, West Mountain, East Mountain and Mount Isola, linked by gondolas and quad chairs to deliver 42 kilometres of groomers plus some of the best tree skiing in Japan. The birch forests here are open and gladed in a way alpine pines never are, perfect for first powder turns and intermediate riders learning to read terrain. The lift system is modern, the lines almost non-existent, and a single mid-week storm can replenish the entire mountain overnight.
At the base, the Rusutsu Resort Tower complex anchors the village with hotel rooms, an indoor wave pool, an old-school amusement park dormant under snow, and a string of restaurants that make this a serious family destination as much as a powder one. Onsen open until midnight, kid-friendly ski school and lower lift prices than Niseko have turned Rusutsu into the Hokkaido secret that is no longer a secret. From New Chitose airport count on roughly two hours by direct shuttle bus, fewer transfers than its famous neighbour.
