Cogne

Cogne is a stone-built Aosta Valley village at 1,534 m, set on a wide meadow under the Gran Paradiso, and the nordic-skiing capital of Italy. The 80 km of cross-country tracks on the Sant'Orso meadows draw the cognoscenti, while the modest 9 km alpine area keeps the village blissfully unrushed.

Ski-in/ski-out

Cogne is a nordic village more than an alpine one, so true ski-in/ski-out is rare; many hotels open straight onto the Sant'Orso cross-country loops a few steps from the door.

Get to know the resort

Cogne earns its reputation on the strength of its setting: a south-facing village at the head of a wide alpine basin, with the snowfields of the Gran Paradiso filling the skyline. The 80 km of nordic loops on the Sant'Orso meadows run flat and tree-lined past the hamlet of Lillaz, and the network reaches Valnontey, Gimillan and the higher Vallone dell'Urtier for skating and classic styles alike. The downhill area on Mont Sery is small at 9 km and squarely intermediate, useful as a warm-up day or for kids learning, not a destination in itself. The village is one of the Aosta Valley's best preserved, with a Walser-influenced wood-and-stone vernacular and a food scene built on Fontina, lardo d'Arnad, mocetta and the local seuppa ร  la valpellinentse soup. Plenty of guests come simply for the eating, the Bisses irrigation walks frozen white in winter, and the access to Gran Paradiso National Park on snowshoes. Hotels skew toward small, owner-run properties with serious tables.

Good to know

  • The terrain is well balanced: 0 green, 5 blue, 3 red and 1 black runs, which suits a mixed group skiing together at different levels.
  • From 1534 m at the base to 2252 m up top, the resort leans on grooming and snowmaking in lean spells (score 76/100).
  • It is a compact resort, 9 km of piste on 4 lifts, best as a day trip or a relaxed short break rather than a week-long base.
  • The lifts typically turn for about 16 weeks a season, planning around late January to late February tends to land the most reliable cover.
