The village stands at the end of the road, hemmed in by the Grande Casse and the glaciers of the Vanoise National Park, founded in 1963 to protect the ibex on the Italian border. Twelve lifts and 27 km of piste keep the local skiing intentionally human-scaled: eight greens, twelve blues, twelve reds and four blacks spread between Mont Bochor and Becquetta. The real draw, though, is what lies beyond the rope lines, where waymarked snowshoe routes and classic ski-touring itineraries climb toward the Col d'Aussois, the Refuge de la Vanoise and the Pointe de la Réchasse. Pralognan stays family-paced because it never wanted to be a Tarentaise factory resort, and the lift pass and lessons reflect that. Hotels stretch along the main street rather than clinging to a lift queue, and the typical evening looks like a fondue with a window view of the Grand Bec rather than a packed après-ski bar. For booking, check Booking, Expedia and Hotels.com, but call ahead in February school holidays as the village is small.
