Champagny-en-Vanoise

A traditional Savoyard village sitting at 1,250 m in the shadow of the Bellecôte glacier, with the Vanoise National Park out the back door and the whole 425 km Paradiski domain up the gondola. Champagny is the quiet, low-key end of La Plagne, all stone roofs and church bells where the hill above goes all aluminium and apartment blocks. Skiers come for the access, ice climbers come for the frozen waterfalls, and almost no one comes by accident.

Ski-in/ski-out

Champagny is a low village at 1,250 m: you reach the Paradiski slopes via the Champagny-en-Vanoise gondola, not by clipping in at the door. Hotels in the central village are typically 2 to 6 minutes' walk to the gondola base, and the home run from above arrives on the same flank, so the morning out and evening return are both straightforward.

Get to know the resort

Champagny is laid out the old way, a tight cluster of stone-and-wood chalets around a 17th-century baroque church, with the Champagny-en-Vanoise gondola lifting out of the village to plug straight into the Paradiski lift network and the Bellecôte glacier at 3,250 m. Skiing it gives you the full 425 km Paradiski domain on a single pass, both the La Plagne side and, via the Vanoise Express cable car, the whole Les Arcs sector. The personality is village first, ski resort second. The lower hamlet of Champagny-le-Haut sits inside the Vanoise National Park boundary and turns into one of France's best ice-climbing arenas every January, when the cascades freeze solid. Most skiers staying here are families, regulars, or people who tried the purpose-built hubs once and decided they wanted dinner in a place with a baker. The trade-off is honest: less in-and-out skiing convenience at altitude, far more atmosphere at the end of the day.
