Saint-Jean-d'Arves

Saint-Jean-d'Arves is the stone-built, quietly traditional face of Les Sybelles, strung along a sunny shelf at 1,550 m above the Arc valley. The Aiguilles d'Arves draw their three-peaked silhouette against the sky and the Etendard glacier glints over the ridge. After the concrete blocks of the higher Sybelles villages, the wood-and-stone hamlets here feel like another century.

Ski-in/ski-out

Ski-in/ski-out at Saint-Jean-d'Arves is partial: La Chal and the modern apartment line around the lift base deliver true door-to-piste, while properties in the older hamlets along the valley road are five to ten minutes by free shuttle to the lifts.

Get to know the resort

Saint-Jean-d'Arves shares the 310 km, 67-lift Les Sybelles domain with Le Corbier, La Toussuire, Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves, Les Bottieres and Saint-Colomban-des-Villards, but skis with its own character. The village is split between several hamlets, and the lift base sits at La Chal, where a fast chair pulls you up to the Sybelles ridge and the link to Saint-Sorlin and beyond. Most of the local piste is intermediate blue and red, sunny in the morning and shaded by Les Aiguilles d'Arves in the late afternoon. Above 2,500 m the snow holds late, with the season running to mid-April in a normal year. Off the piste, the Arves valley keeps a working farming life, with summer pastures and stone farmhouses still in use. Evenings are quiet by alpine resort standards: a handful of bars, a couple of restaurants, and an early start the next morning.
