Le Corbier

Long banana-curved apartment blocks at 1,550 m, parked on a sunny shelf above the Maurienne, with 310 km of Les Sybelles pistes opening directly off the balconies. Le Corbier is unapologetically 1960s, a piece of pure French ski-resort modernism that hides one of the easiest big-domain ski holidays in the Alps. Bring the kids, forget the gondola queues, ski straight off the bed.

Ski-in/ski-out

Le Corbier was purpose-built to be ski-in/ski-out and it largely delivers: the apartment blocks line the snowfront at 1,550 m, with lifts and beginner runs starting within a 1 to 3 minute walk of most front doors. A few buildings on the back side of the resort involve a short climb in boots to reach the snow; ask for a piste-side property if true ski-in/ski-out matters to you.

Get to know the resort

Built from scratch in the 1960s on a south-facing ridge of the Maurienne at 1,550 m, Le Corbier is a textbook integrated French ski station: long curved apartment blocks designed to put every front door within walking distance of the snow, no cars to cross, no village outside the resort itself. From here you ski straight onto Les Sybelles, 310 km and 67 lifts linking Le Corbier with La Toussuire, Saint-Jean-d'Arves, Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves and Les Bottières across a single ridge system. Terrain is gentle in character, with 18 green and 35 blue runs against just 12 black, which is why it has become a favourite for families with small skiers and for groups taking lessons. Lodging is mostly self-catering apartments with a handful of small hotels, and the price point sits well below the better-known Tarentaise resorts on the other side of the watershed. Aesthetics are not the reason to come; mileage, sun and value are.
