Cheap ski resorts in Europe that don't feel cheap

Cheap ski resorts in Europe that don't feel cheap

Forget the Megève price tag. Eastern Europe, the Pyrenees, and a handful of overlooked Italian valleys deliver real vertical, real snow, and real apres for half what you'd pay in Verbier. Here's where lift passes still cost under 45 euros a day.

24 resorts

Our top picks

At a glance, the best resorts on this list are Orelle, Les Menuires, Brides-les-Bains, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Nendaz, Pragelato, Sauze d'Oulx.

How we picked

If your budget says no to the Three Valleys, your skis can still say yes to a long week of cruising. Bansko, in the Bulgarian Pirin, leads this ranking on pure value: lift pass under 40 euros, a gondola straight from town, and beers at 3 euros after a 1600m vertical day. Borovets, an hour from Sofia, is the no-frills sibling, great for beginners and families who want short transfers. Slovakia's Jasná in the Low Tatras has had serious investment, with a Doppelmayr lift network and a respectable 1100m of vertical, while Bukovel in the Ukrainian Carpathians remains an outlier when geopolitics allow. In Western Europe, value still exists if you know where to look. Sierra Nevada near Granada offers the highest skiing in Spain, paired with tapas evenings in town. Andorra's Grandvalira and Vallnord undercut the French Alps by 30 percent. In Italy, Cervinia's early-season pricing and the entire South Tyrol Ortler Skiarena pass remain bargains for European standards, and tucked-away gems like Sappada in the eastern Dolomites or Ponte di Legno on the Tonale glacier give you genuine alpine skiing without the Cortina markup. These are the resorts that prove cheap doesn't have to mean compromised.

A Belle Epoque spa town at 600 m that somehow became the cheap way into Les 3 Vallées, with the Olympe gondola hauling skiers from the high street straight up into Méribel. Brides-les-Bains will not pretend to be an Alpine postcard, the buildings are turn-of-the-century and the streetlamps are still cast iron. It is the rare place where you sleep in a thermal town and ski 600 km of piste from a single lift pass.

Long banana-curved apartment blocks at 1,550 m, parked on a sunny shelf above the Maurienne, with 310 km of Les Sybelles pistes opening directly off the balconies. Le Corbier is unapologetically 1960s, a piece of pure French ski-resort modernism that hides one of the easiest big-domain ski holidays in the Alps. Bring the kids, forget the gondola queues, ski straight off the bed.

La Toussuire is a purpose-built 1960s village perched at 1,750 m in the Maurienne, a gateway into the Les Sybelles domain. The architecture is unapologetic concrete from the lift-it-and-pour era, but the snow at altitude holds and the ski-in/ski-out is as honest as it gets. Families come back year after year for the price-to-piste ratio.
