Best ski resorts with a glacier

The Matterhorn watches over every run, and no cars are allowed to spoil the view. Zermatt skis all year on the Theodul glacier, the only resort in the Alps that genuinely never closes.

Austria's largest glacier ski area, the Stubai climbs to 3210 m a short drive from Innsbruck. Snow-sure from autumn to late spring, with gentle glacier cruising and grand high-alpine views.

Innsbruck is the Olympic alpine city, where the Nordkette range rises straight from the old town and a funicular carries you above the rooftops in minutes. One pass, the Ski plus City pass Stubai Innsbruck, opens around thirteen ski areas spread around the city, from the city peaks to the Stubai Glacier at 3210 metres.

The Mölltaler Gletscher rises above Flattach in Carinthia, an underground funicular climbing from 1,200 m to the Schareck-Wurtenkees at 3,122 m for 17 km of year-round snow.

Home to the Kitzsteinhorn, Salzburg's only glacier, Kaprun offers snow-sure skiing to 3029 m from autumn into late spring. A quiet village paired with Zell am See on one pass.

A monastery town under the glaciated Titlis, Engelberg is one of Europe's great freeride resorts, with a long season and huge vertical. The famous Laub and Galtiberg descents draw powder hunters from around the world.
