Nassfeld

Nassfeld is Carinthia's biggest ski area, draped across the Italian border at the pass of the same name. The Millennium Express gondola climbs from Tröpolach to 2,020 m and 110 km of mostly south-facing pistes, sunny and snowy in the same breath thanks to the Adriatic moisture punching up the valley.

Ski-in/ski-out

Nassfeld is a two-base resort: a cluster of hotels sits up at the pass itself, true ski-in/ski-out onto the pistes, while Tröpolach down in the valley offers village life and the Millennium Express gondola from the door.

Get to know the resort

Nassfeld trades on a coincidence of geography that the rest of the Alps would happily borrow: a south-facing high pass that catches sun all winter and the moist Adriatic air that drives reliable, generous snowfall. The result is 110 km of piste, 30 lifts and a sense that the conditions are working with you rather than against. The Millennium Express, one of the longest gondolas in the Alps, lifts you in stages from Tröpolach at 610 m up to the Madritsche at 2,020 m, and from there the runs spread either side of the Italian border for a long, classic cross-border carve into Pontebba and a rifugio lunch. The terrain reads family on paper, weighted to blue and red runs with a solid block of black for stronger legs, and the layout is well-organised and easy to read with kids in tow. The season runs December 7 to April 14, with a snow score of 78 and altitudes from 610 m to 2,020 m. Nassfeld is the one Austrian resort where the pasta is as close as the apple strudel.
