Ascou

Ascou is a tiny Ariège ski area at 1,500 m above Ax-les-Thermes, deep in the eastern Pyrenees. The lift-served piste runs to just 18 km, but the freeride terrain off the back of the Llaurenti plateau is the real story for those who know how to read it. It is the quiet door to a corner of the Pyrenees the package crowds skip.

Ski-in/ski-out

Ascou has only a handful of true ski-in/ski-out properties at the lift base on the Llaurenti plateau. Most lodging is in Ax-les-Thermes down in the valley, fifteen kilometres and twenty-five minutes by mountain road to the lifts.

Get to know the resort

Ascou stretches 18 km of piste on 7 lifts across the Llaurenti plateau, between 1,500 m and 2,030 m. The marked terrain is sober: five greens, eight blues, five reds and two blacks, enough for a family week but not a holiday on its own for stronger skiers. The pull is what sits outside the boundary: open bowls, scattered woods and serious freeride lines into the Donezan side, all of it ungroomed and to be read carefully. Ax 3 Domaines, twenty minutes by road, runs a much bigger 80 km domain on a shared lift pass and is the regular complement. The Ariège valley below is wild, with Ax-les-Thermes and its hot pools as the base town, and the Romanesque churches and Cathar history of the area as a rest-day fallback. Lift queues are non-existent except at New Year and February school holiday peaks.
