Salla

Salla sits hard against the Russian border in eastern Lapland, marketing itself as the resort 'in the middle of nowhere' and counting more than 200 nights of Northern Lights a year. Fifteen kilometres of piste lie at the foot of Sallatunturi (525 m), wrapped in Salla National Park and the largest reindeer herd in southern Lapland.

Get to know the resort

The mountain itself is small, six lifts and a handful of friendly runs from the summit, but the appeal lies in the surrounding silence: Salla National Park starts at the lift base and unfurls north and east in untouched spruce forest. The resort leans hard into reindeer-husbandry culture, with Sami-led farm visits, husky-sledding kennels and an Aurora-camp village of kotas a short drive from town. The skies are dark enough that aurora viewing requires no more effort than stepping outside on a clear evening. A quirky permanent installation, the 'first hotel on the moon,' adds a touch of conceptual whimsy to the village. Snow holds reliably from early November to the end of April.
