Ruka

Ruka opens earlier than any serious resort in Europe, often by 6 October, on the Rukatunturi above Kuusamo in eastern Lapland. The first FIS Cross-Country and Ski Jumping World Cup of the season is held here each November, and the resort sits 30 km from the Russian border in deep boreal forest.

Ski-in/ski-out

The pedestrian base village clusters tightly around two main lift hubs, and apart-hotels and cabins on the slope itself provide proper ski-in/ski-out at the door.

Get to know the resort

The 492 m Rukatunturi is small in vertical but punches well above its weight: 39 km of piste, 22 lifts and a competition-grade snowpark that hosts World Cup freestyle events. The base village wraps around a small frozen lake and stays lively after dark thanks to the early sunset and a focused cluster of bars, restaurants and rental shops. Beyond the alpine slopes, 500 km of cross-country trails roll east into the Oulanka National Park, where brown bears wake briefly in autumn and reappear in May. Husky kennels and reindeer farms ring Kuusamo town, and Aurora hunts head into the dark forests towards the Russian border. The cold and the snow are reliable from October to early May.
