Pyhätunturi handles the bulk of the alpine skiing, with steeper black and red runs threading down through old-growth spruce; Luosto, smaller and more residential, suits beginners and families. The ski-bus connecting the two takes about forty minutes and stops along the way at the Lampivaara amethyst mine, where visitors can dig their own crystal under guided supervision. The Sodankylä Aurora research station and its observation tower sit nearby, and the area markets itself frankly as one of the calmest, darkest skies in Lapland. Off the slopes, the national park trails carry snowshoers and skiers up onto the tunturi ridges for sunrise and aurora viewing well past midnight. The season runs late October to the start of May.
