The lift sector sits straight above the village, running from 480 m to 970 m with 17 km of pistes spread across seven lifts, mostly blue with a couple of testing reds and blacks at the top. The real story, though, is the back-country: the Vindelfjällen nature reserve covers more than 5,500 square kilometres and rolls north from the village in a sea of treeless fjäll, ideal for touring, splitboarding and overnight kåta camps with a guide. Hemavan Tärnaby Airport is on the edge of the village, with direct flights from Stockholm that make a weekend feasible from southern Europe. Sister village Tärnaby lies 18 km down the E12 and rounds out the local lift offering. Sami culture is alive in the valley, with reindeer round-ups and small artisan workshops that you can visit. It is a serious destination for skiers who want fjäll, distance and quiet rather than apres-ski volume.
