Valle Nevado vs Cerro Catedral

Valle Nevado vs Cerro Catedral

This is the classic Chile versus Argentina question. Valle Nevado is a high, dry ski-machine an hour from Santiago, while Cerro Catedral, above Bariloche, is the largest ski area in South America, lower and greener but wrapped around a proper lakeside town.

Verdict: who picks which

Go to Valle Nevado for the snow, to Cerro Catedral for the size and the setting. Valle Nevado sits at 3000 to 3670 m and delivers the driest, most reliable snow of the two, on treeless high-alpine terrain reachable on a day trip from Santiago. Cerro Catedral is far bigger, 120 km of pistes and nearly 40 lifts spread from 1030 to 2388 m, with tree skiing, dramatic views over Lago Nahuel Huapi, and Bariloche itself for chocolate, steak and nightlife. Valle Nevado wins on altitude and snow security; Catedral wins on scale, scenery, apres and value.

The choice really turns on what you want from a southern-winter trip. Valle Nevado is the safe bet for snow: at over 3000 m the Andes here stay cold and dry through the mid-June to early-October season, and the treeless bowls are made for cruising and sunny high-altitude laps. It is also the simplest to reach, an hour or two from Santiago's international airport. Cerro Catedral asks for a longer haul to Bariloche, but rewards it with the biggest terrain on the continent, genuine tree skiing for bad-weather days, and a lively resort town on the shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi that turns the trip into a proper holiday. Snow lower down can be fickle in a warm spell, which is the trade for all that variety and atmosphere. For a snow-first, fly-in ski week choose Valle Nevado; for size, scenery, food and value across a range of levels choose Cerro Catedral.
