Verdict: who picks which

Pick Whistler Blackcomb for scale and energy: two mountains, huge vertical, and a lively pedestrian village, all about two hours from Vancouver. Just expect a low 675m base that can turn wet and warm down low. Pick Lake Louise for drier, colder Rockies snow and some of the most spectacular scenery in skiing, with the calm of staying in Banff or Lake Louise village. It is smaller, but the Big 3 ticket opens up the wider Banff area.

Whistler Blackcomb is enormous, spanning 460km across two linked mountains to claim the title of largest ski area in North America, with a huge vertical from a 675m base to 2284m. That low base is its one weakness, since coastal storms can leave the lower runs wet and warm even as deep snowfall (a strong 94 score) piles up high. The village is a lively, walkable hub roughly two hours from Vancouver, buzzing with apres and nightlife. Lake Louise is far smaller at 175km, climbing from 1646m to 2637m, but its colder, drier snow and breathtaking Banff National Park scenery are unmatched, and the Big 3 ticket links it to the wider area. You stay in tranquil Banff or Lake Louise village rather than a resort hub, trading nightlife for serenity and scale for setting. Go big and social at Whistler, or quieter and scenic with drier snow at Lake Louise.
