Perisher vs Thredbo

Perisher vs Thredbo

Australia's two biggest resorts sit either side of Kosciuszko National Park. Perisher is the largest ski area in the Southern Hemisphere by lifts, a sprawling four-village network, while Thredbo has the country's longest vertical and a real alpine village at the base.

Verdict: who picks which

Perisher is the bigger playground, Thredbo the better base. Perisher packs 47 lifts and 70 km across four linked villages, with gentle beginner terrain and a train that runs skiers up from the valley, which makes it a favourite for families and first-timers. Thredbo trades width for height: Australia's longest vertical at 672 m, steeper advanced runs, and a walkable village of bars and restaurants at the foot of the slopes that gives it the country's best after-ski. Choose Perisher for size and learning, Thredbo for vertical, village life and advanced terrain.

The two share the Snowy Mountains and the same mid-June to late-September season, and most visitors base in Jindabyne, about half an hour from either. Perisher is the numbers resort: four villages (Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Blue Cow and Guthega) stitched together by 47 lifts and the Skitube train, with acres of easy, rolling terrain that make it the natural pick for families, schools and anyone finding their feet. It has no real pedestrian village of its own, so evenings happen down in Jindabyne. Thredbo is the character resort: a single mountain with the longest continuous run and biggest vertical in the country, more of the steep and the trees for confident skiers, and a proper village of lodges, bars and restaurants strung along the Thredbo River, so you can ski back to the door and walk to dinner. Snow can be marginal at Australian altitudes in a warm year at both. Pick Perisher for breadth and beginners, Thredbo for the descent and the after-ski.
