Christmas and New Year skiing 2026: where snow is a safe bet

In late December the snowpack is young, so altitude does the heavy lifting. Val Thorens (2300 m), Cervinia (2050 m), Obergurgl, Sestriere and Livigno all start their pistes high enough that Christmas snow is close to guaranteed, while the glacier resorts, Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Hintertux, Sölden, Kaprun and the Stubai, have been skiing since autumn and simply do not depend on December storms.

The week between Christmas and New Year is the most expensive and the most booked of the whole winter. If you want it, book by early autumn: slope-side beds in the snow-sure names go first. For the party, Val Thorens and Ischgl own New Year on the snow; for a quieter, more elegant réveillon, Lech-Zürs, Obergurgl and Zermatt do candlelight better than anyone.

And a trick the regulars use: the first week of January. Same young-winter snow, the same pistes freshly groomed, at a fraction of the New Year price and with half the people. If your dates are flexible, it is the best-value week of the entire winter.
