Ski-in/ski-out

Mittenwald is a valley town, not a slope-side resort: the Karwendelbahn talstation sits at the edge of the village and the Kranzberg family lifts are a short walk or shuttle away. Hotels listed as ski-in/ski-out are typically within five minutes' walk of a lift, with the Dammkar bottom station ending close to town.

Get to know the resort

On paper Mittenwald has just 12 km of piste over four blues, four reds and four blacks, which undersells what is really a backcountry destination. The Karwendelbahn cable car climbs from the valley floor at 920 m to the upper station at 2,244 m, opening the Dammkarabfahrt: a wide, glaciated cirque turning into a seven-kilometre top-to-bottom descent back into town. It is the run that built the resort's reputation, used as a powder line by freeriders from across the Alps when conditions land. The town itself is one of the most photogenic in Bavaria, with Stradivari-school violin makers still cutting maple in workshops along the old market street and LΓΌftlmalerei facades on the inn fronts. Hotels run from family-owned Gasthof properties to wellness houses with Karwendel views, all available on Booking, Expedia and Hotels.com. Mittenwald rewards skiers who can read a face, carry a transceiver and accept that a hero day is a function of the snowpack rather than a marked piste plan.
