Get to know the resort
The 39 km of alpine piste are split between two facing mountains, Geilo and Vestlia, linked by the valley floor and a single combined lift pass. The terrain is gentle in character, with long blues and a few proper reds, and the snow record at 1,178 m is steady from mid-November to the end of April. The real magic is the 220 km of cross-country trail network on the Hardangervidda plateau, groomed several times a week and starting right from the village edge. Trains from Oslo and Bergen stop at Geilo station in the middle of town, three and a half hours either way, with bus connections to the lifts in two minutes. The village itself keeps a low-rise Hallingdal feel, with traditional stabbur (raised storehouse) timber buildings dotted between the hotels, and prices that reflect old-fashioned Norwegian family tourism more than alpine resort speculation. Booking, Expedia and Hotels.com cover hotels in town and lodge apartments closer to the Vestlia lifts.
