Le Mourtis

Le Mourtis is a small forested ski area at 1,350 m on the southern slope of the Haute-Garonne Pyrenees, above the village of Boutx. It is the closest serious snow to Toulouse, ninety minutes by car, and a low-key alternative to the bigger Pyrenean resorts further west. The Pic de Cagire makes the backdrop.

Ski-in/ski-out

True ski-in/ski-out at Le Mourtis is limited to the cluster of apartments and the small hotels built right at the lift base, where the home piste runs to the door. Other lodging in Boutx and the Comminges villages below is twenty to forty minutes by car up the mountain road.

Get to know the resort

Le Mourtis covers 25 km of piste on 8 lifts, almost all cut through beech and pine forest, with the top of the area at 1,860 m. The mix runs eight greens, ten blues, five reds and two blacks, which sums up the family bias: this is a place to learn, to come back at weekends from Toulouse, and to teach kids without breaking the bank. Lift pass prices are among the lowest in the French Pyrenees. Snow can be marginal in early December and late March given the southern slope and modest altitude, but the tree cover keeps the cold layer in shape longer than open Pyrenean balconies. The base hamlet is small: a couple of restaurants, a hotel or two and the apartment buildings that grew up around the lift station in the 1960s. The wider Comminges valley below is wooded, rural and quiet, with the Pic de Cagire watching over the lot.
