How we picked
Chile's three Andean classics each frame a different facet of South American skiing. Portillo (2 hours north of Santiago, base 2880 m) hosted the only Alpine World Championships ever held in the Southern Hemisphere (1966) and remains the August training base for US, Canadian and European national teams, with the iconic yellow Hotel Portillo on Laguna del Inca. Valle Nevado (1 hour 30 east of Santiago, base 3025 m, highest in Chile) runs modern Compagnie des Alpes design with a Three Valleys interconnect to El Colorado and La Parva. La Parva (Tres Valles too) leans residential and quieter, with Las Lomas alpine bowls and the Falsa Parva freeride hike-to. Southern Hemisphere season runs June to October. The Andes do the work; Santiago is the gateway 1 to 3 hours below.
