Skiing in the February 2027 school holidays: where to go
February is the busiest month on European snow: French zones, UK half term and Italian settimana bianca all collide. Here is the 2027 crowd calendar, the resorts big enough to absorb it, and the weeks the locals keep for themselves.
The crowds in the Alps follow the French school calendar, so it pays to know it even if you are not French. In 2027, zone C (Paris, Toulouse, Montpellier) breaks from 6 to 22 February, zone A (Lyon, Bordeaux, Grenoble) from 13 February to 1 March, and zone B (Lille, Marseille, Strasbourg) from 20 February to 8 March. UK half term lands in the middle of that, around mid-February. The peak runs from 13 to 27 February, when two zones are always on the snow at once.
Two ways to win. Either pick a resort built for volume: Val Thorens, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Tignes and the big Austrian machines move enormous numbers of skiers with modern lifts, so queues stay bearable even in peak week. Or shift your dates: the first week of February (before zone C) and the first week of March (only zone B left) offer the same midwinter snow with far fewer people.
Either way, February is the month to book earliest. High-altitude, snow-sure resorts sell out first, and slope-side lodging goes months ahead. If you are reading this in summer, you are on time.

Frequently asked questions
- What are the French school zone dates for February 2027?
- Zone C (Paris, Toulouse, Montpellier): 6 to 22 February. Zone A (Lyon, Bordeaux, Grenoble): 13 February to 1 March. Zone B (Lille, Marseille, Strasbourg): 20 February to 8 March 2027.
- Which February 2027 week is the quietest on the slopes?
- The first week of February, before zone C starts on the 6th, then the 1 to 8 March window when only zone B remains. Avoid 13 to 27 February, when two zones overlap plus UK half term.
- Which resorts handle the February crowds best?
- The high-capacity giants: Val Thorens, Les Arcs, La Plagne and Tignes in France, plus big Austrian networks like Ischgl and Saalbach. Modern lifts and huge terrain dilute peak-week queues, and their altitude keeps the snow reliable.
