Vallorcine

Vallorcine is the last French village in the Chamonix valley before the Swiss border, set at 1,260 m below the Aiguilles Rouges. The cable car from the village links into the Domaine de Balme (Le Tour-Vallorcine, 51 km of piste), and the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass extends the skiing across the wider Chamonix valley and over into Switzerland. The Mont-Blanc Express train from Martigny stops in the village, which makes it one of the few French resorts you can actually reach without a car.

Ski-in/ski-out

True ski-in/ski-out is limited to a few residences around the Vallorcine cable car base. Most chalets and gîtes in the village need a short shuttle or train ride to reach the lift each morning.

Get to know the resort

Vallorcine has the upper Chamonix valley's authentic Alpine feel without the central Chamonix crowds, a real working village rather than a resort grown around lifts. The Vallorcine cable car climbs the Aiguilles Rouges side to meet the Le Tour lifts above, and the 51 km Domaine de Balme covers a north-facing bowl that holds snow later into the season than anywhere else in the valley. The cult Vagabond ski-touring traverse from Vallorcine across to Le Tour is a low-commitment introduction to the off-piste culture of the valley. On the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass the rest of the Chamonix valley is open (Brévent, Flégère, Grands Montets, the Aiguille du Midi) plus connections into the Swiss resorts above Martigny. The Mont-Blanc Express train along the valley floor is genuinely useful: leave the car at the chalet, ski Brévent in the morning, eat in Argentière at lunch, ski Balme in the afternoon. Geneva airport is about 1h30 by road, slightly more by train and bus.
