Splügen

Splügen is a heritage Graubünden village at 1,457 m on the north side of the San Bernardino, listed among Switzerland's most beautiful settlements and built almost entirely of stone and larch. The Tambo sector gives 30 km of wide, snow-sure piste up to 2,215 m. Quiet runs, traditional houses, and the old Splügen pass road over to Italy still set the tone.

Ski-in/ski-out

Splügen has no true ski-in/ski-out hotels; the village sits a few minutes' walk from the gondola base, and a short ski-bus loop links the more distant houses.

Get to know the resort

Splügen has been a stopover village since the Roman road from Como to Chur ran over the pass, and the centre still looks the part: blackened stone houses, larch shingles, and a cobbled square in front of the small church. The Tambo sector is a single gondola plus a few drag-lifts above the village, with wide, almost empty north-facing runs from 2,215 m back to 1,457 m and a base altitude that secures the season from mid-December to early April. It is a freeriders' quiet secret as much as a family hill: tree skiing in the larch forest, marked itineraries off the Tambo summit, and almost no queues on a powder day. The cross-country tracks along the Hinterrhein and the ski touring on the Tambo group are the local pride. Evenings are short, with a couple of long-running inns serving capuns and pizzoccheri, and the night sky above 1,457 m is uncommonly dark for a Swiss valley.
