Muju Deogyusan

Muju Deogyusan rides higher than any ski peak in Korea. Set inside Deogyusan National Park, the gondola climbs toward Hyangjeokbong at 1614 m and unfurls views over forested ridges, Buddhist temples and the Sobaek range. It is the southerly resort with the most honest snow and the longest sight-lines on the country's map.

Get to know the resort

Muju Deogyusan in North Jeolla province is Korea's outlier, the only major resort that sits inside a national park and the only one whose summit pushes past 1600 m. Fourteen lifts, twenty-one trails, base at 730 m, top station at 1614 m: a mix that mirrors a small European hill more than a Seoul day-trip resort. The piste tally splits across four greens, seven blues, six reds and four blacks, including the famous Raiders run that drops in a steep wide pitch from the upper gondola and gives advanced skiers something to brag about. The Tianggandyo gondola is the spine of the system, climbing nearly nine hundred metres of vertical from car park to ridge in a single ride. Snowfall numbers are the strongest in southern Korea thanks to the altitude and the moisture pulled off the Yellow Sea, so the season runs solidly from early December into March even when nearby resorts fade. The base village is a planned ski town built for the 1997 Winter Universiade, with a Maremons-style hotel, condos, a pedestrian plaza, restaurants and a sizeable spa pool. Off the snow, the Deogyusan National Park gives summer-stay value, Baengnyeonsa temple is a quiet ten-minute drive away and the bibimbap capital of Jeonju is just over an hour by car. Muju suits adventurous intermediates, advanced skiers chasing the country's longest verticals and travellers who want to pair skiing with a genuine cultural southern Korea itinerary.
