Hochries-Samerberg
Hochries-Samerberg is the quiet Chiemgau hill above the Samerberg plateau, 13 km of family piste between 700 m and the 1,569 m Hochries summit. The Chiemsee opens to the north for one of the prettiest sunset views in the Bavarian Alps. Half an hour from Rosenheim, an easy world away from the Sudelfeld and Spitzingsee crowds.
Pistes and lifts
Run counts and piste kilometres are indicative. Green runs only exist in France, Spain, Andorra and Germany; Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany start at blue. Indicative average snow depth near the top of the resort, in cm.
Samerberg is a scatter of farms below the lifts rather than a compact village, so ski-in/ski-out is essentially absent; a short drive or shuttle takes you to the chairlift base.
Get to know the resort
The Samerberg is one of those soft Bavarian plateaus where farms run almost to the lift base and the church spire is still the tallest local feature. The chairlift climbs out of the meadows to the upper Hochries flank, with 13 km of mostly red and blue runs that face north and east and so hold their cover longer than the bare numbers suggest. Snowmaking covers the main spine and the season runs from mid-December to the end of March, with a real spring sun bonus in the last weeks. Beginners and children use the lower drag-lifts on the Samerberg meadows, families take on the long Hochries reds, and stronger skiers cherry-pick the short black off the summit chair. The view down to the Chiemsee, with the islands of Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee, is the real reason to stay until late afternoon. Down in Samerberg village and the neighbouring Frasdorf, traditional Bavarian inns serve schweinsbraten and Chiemgau lake fish, and the train station at Rosenheim is half an hour away.
