Falls Creek sits on the Bogong High Plains above the town of Mt Beauty, a four-hour drive north-east of Melbourne. The terrain spreads across a rolling plateau between 1500 and 1842 metres, served by 14 lifts and stitched together by 90 named trails. The pitch is generous rather than dramatic: long, sweeping intermediates through the Ruined Castle and Sun Valley, a strong learner zone at Wombats Ramble, and steeper black runs off Towers and the Summit. Above the lift system, Mt McKay opens up a serious backcountry zone, accessed by a snowcat shuttle, with wide open faces and snow gum gladed pitches. The pedestrian village is the real differentiator. Cars park below at Slalom Plaza, the main street is closed to traffic, and a string of lodges line the slopes so that most of them are genuinely ski-in/ski-out. Falls Creek also has the strongest cross-country tradition in Australia, host of the Kangaroo Hoppet each August, and a 65 km Nordic trail network running across the high plains. Suits families, intermediates and Nordic skiers above all, with a serious bonus for skiers chasing untracked backcountry lines.
