Get to know the resort
Tucked into a high cirque near the Bielsa tunnel to Spain, Piau-Engaly is the loftiest ski resort in the French Pyrenees and reliably the snowiest, which is why powder skiers make the trip. Its 65 km of piste rise to 2600 m over open, snow-sure bowls, with serious off-piste and steep blacks alongside well-protected beginner areas. The resort itself is small and purpose-built, all of it within ski reach of the lifts, a no-nonsense base for chasing the best snow in the range.
Good to know
- The terrain is well balanced: 6 green, 12 blue, 14 red and 6 black runs, which suits a mixed group skiing together at different levels.
- The base sits at 1850 m and the top reaches 2600 m, a profile that holds snow well across a normal winter (score 82/100).
- With 65 km of piste on 12 lifts, it is a mid-size area, easy to get to know in a long weekend.
- The lifts typically turn for about 18 weeks a season, planning around late January to late February tends to land the most reliable cover.
