Killington

They call it The Beast of the East, and the nickname earns itself every season. Killington is the largest ski area in the eastern United States, sprawled across six peaks, and it opens in late October when most resorts are still ordering snowmaking parts. By May it is still running. The K-1 gondola hoists you above 1200 metres of working Vermont mountain.

Ski-in/ski-out

Slopeside lodging exists at the Killington Grand Resort Hotel and a few condo clusters on Snowshed and Bear Mountain. Most of the wider Killington bed base lies along the access road, served by a free shuttle that runs late into the apres hours.

Get to know the resort

Killington runs on scale and stubbornness. Six interconnected peaks, 1509 acres of patrolled terrain, 140 kilometres of trails fed by the most aggressive snowmaking operation in the eastern hemisphere of North America. The season opens in late October with a single white ribbon of manmade snow snaking down Superstar, and that ribbon almost always becomes the venue for the women's Audi FIS Ski World Cup giant slalom in late November. The closing date is technically May 11, but the resort has pushed into June more than once. The K-1 gondola is the legendary lift, climbing from 354 metres at the base to the wind-scoured summit. Down at the bottom, the access road earns its own reputation. The Pickle Barrel is the original loud bar with the live band and the spilled drinks. The actual town of Killington sits about 5 kilometres west, quieter, more lived-in. Whichever you choose, the apres scene here is the loudest east of Aspen. Bring legs, bring patience for crowds on weekends, and bring layers, because the wind at the top of K-1 means business.
