Andes, Chile 🇨🇱
Portillo is South American skiing in its purest form: a single bright-yellow hotel on the shore of Laguna del Inca, 145 km north of Santiago and 2,880 metres up the Andes. Host of the 1966 World Championships, it still runs on its original Saturday-to-Saturday rhythm, with seven lifts and almost no day-trippers.
Generally yes. From 2880 m at the base to 3322 m up top, the profile holds snow well across a normal winter (score 87/100).
Most hotels sit right on the snow front, so this is genuine ski-in/ski-out: park once on arrival and ski from the door, with no daily driving or shuttle.
It is a compact area, 35 km of piste on 7 lifts, best for a short break or a focused trip rather than a full week. The piste mix leans gentle (4 green, 5 blue, 3 red, 2 black), so beginners and early intermediates are well served.
Portillo stands out for a genuinely iconic name and a racing and competition pedigree.
In the Southern Hemisphere the season runs roughly Jun 20 to Sep 30 (the local winter), with July and August the most reliable.
