Powder Mountain

Powder Mountain, known to locals as PowMow, is one of the largest skiable areas in the United States, spread across thousands of acres above Eden in northern Utah. It is famous for deep, dry Wasatch powder and for staying remarkably quiet even on a storm day. Much of the terrain is reached by lift, snowcat or a short hike, which spreads skiers out across the bowls and trees. Since Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings took control, the mountain has shifted to a partly private model with capped daily tickets, so it feels emptier than almost anywhere else in the country.

Ski-in/ski-out

On mountain lodging is very limited, so do not expect classic ski in, ski out. A handful of private residences and a small members lodge sit up top, but almost everyone stays down in the Ogden Valley (Eden and Huntsville) and drives up to the base, about 20 to 30 minutes away.

Get to know the resort

Powder Mountain ranks among the biggest ski areas in the country, with well over 8,000 acres of accessible terrain rising to a hike accessed summit near 9,400 feet. A large share of that is served not only by chairlifts but by snowcat and short bootpacks, including the Lightning Ridge cat skiing zone, so even on a powder day the lines and bowls feel empty. The snow is classic Utah, light and dry, with roughly 500 inches falling in an average winter across mellow ridgelines, open glades and steep aspen runs. In 2023 Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings took a controlling stake and is reshaping the resort into a blended public and private model, with a growing members only side, new lifts and a firm cap on daily lift tickets to keep crowds low. On mountain beds are scarce and largely private, so the vast majority of visitors base themselves in the Ogden Valley towns of Eden and Huntsville and make the short drive up each morning. The result is a rare combination of huge, varied terrain and a truly uncrowded mountain that rewards anyone willing to plan ahead and book early.

Good to know

  • The piste map leans gentle: 40 green and 65 blue runs against 32 red and 25 black, so beginners and early intermediates rarely run out of comfortable terrain.
  • With a base at 2103 m climbing to 2872 m, snow reliability is among the best on our index (score 91/100).
  • With 68 km of piste on 9 lifts, it is a mid-size area, easy to get to know in a long weekend.
  • The lifts typically turn for about 18 weeks a season, planning around late January to late February tends to land the most reliable cover.
