Sangre de Cristo, United States 🇺🇸
Taos Ski Valley is the surprise no one tells you about until you go. High New Mexico desert at 2805 metres, dry Southwest powder that falls light and stays light, and a base village of adobe and pine built by a Swiss-French refugee in 1955. Above it rises some of the steepest patrolled terrain in North America.
Generally yes. From 2805 m at the base to 3804 m up top, the profile holds snow well across a normal winter (score 88/100).
Most hotels sit right on the snow front, so this is genuine ski-in/ski-out: park once on arrival and ski from the door, with no daily driving or shuttle.
At 120 km of piste on 14 lifts, it is a substantial mountain that rewards a multi-day stay. It leans toward strong skiers (47 black and 25 red, with 14 green and 24 blue to warm up), so confident skiers get the most from it.
Taos Ski Valley stands out for demanding terrain for strong skiers and snow-sure high-altitude slopes.
The season usually runs Nov 27 to Apr 6 (about 19 weeks). For the most dependable cover, the deep-winter window of January to February is the safe bet. The altitude also holds spring snow, so late-season skiing stays good well into spring.
