Austrian Alps, Austria 🇦🇹
Heiligenblut is a mediaeval Carinthian village at 1,300 m, gathered around a Gothic pilgrimage church under the snow walls of the Großglockner. The Schareck cable car climbs to 2,912 m for 55 km of north-facing, snow-sure pistes that hold cold powder long after the rest of Austria has thawed.
Generally yes. From 1300 m at the base to 2912 m up top, the profile holds snow well across a normal winter (score 84/100).
This is more of a valley base than a slopeside village, so expect a lift, train or shuttle to the snow each morning. Staying central, near the main lift, saves the most time.
With 55 km of piste on 12 lifts, it is a mid-size area, easy to get to know over a long weekend. The terrain is balanced (0 green, 15 blue, 20 red, 8 black), which suits a mixed-level group skiing together.
The season usually runs Dec 7 to Apr 14 (about 18 weeks). For the most dependable cover, the deep-winter window of January to February is the safe bet. Conditions soften as spring arrives, so earlier in the window is the safer call.
